Disinfection is the process of killing microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, cysts, spores and other pathogens. Industrial and commercial clients require disinfection of their source or treated water for a variety of applications.
For example, food processors and beverage manufacturers including food, meat, beverage, bottled water, dairy, breweries and wineries use disinfected water for ingredient water, processing, food handling, washing and cleaning.
Chlorination via chemical addition of either chlorine, chloramines or chlorine dioxide is often used for disinfection. However, as an alternative to chlorination, Aqua Clear offers disinfection systems which eliminate common problems associated with chlorine disinfection such as chemical residue and chlorinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs). These systems include ultraviolet (UV) sterilizers and ozone generators.
Aqua Clear UV and ozone systems are used for a variety of customer applications including:
- Disinfection of process waters to protect biocontamination of manufacturing equipment
- Purification of rinse water that is needed for cleaning of food products and packaging
- Biological control of microorganisms and algae for cooling towers and closed loops
- Pretreatment of irrigation water
- Treatment of stored bulk water through the use of a recirculating disinfection loop
- Disinfection of bulk product water that is needed for bottled water and reconstituted juices
Aqua Clear disinfection systems are also a component of wastewater reuse. Aqua Clear UV sterilizers are included as post-treatment of reuse water purified by MBR, UF/MF, and/or RO membrane technologies. The inclusion of a UV system provides the necessary additional log reduction credits needed to permit the wastewater reuse system by the regulatory agency.
