In High Purity/Ultrapure water applications when dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) or oxygen (O2) is present in the water, a Membrane Contactor is often used for degasification between the RO and the EDI (or DI) to reduce the load on the EDI (or DI)
Membrane Contactors are also an alternative to standard Deaerators for removing CO2 and 02 from boiler feedwater. The removal of CO2 and O2 protects boilers from corrosion.
A Membrane Contactor uses a hollow fiber membrane where the feed water flows across the outside of the hollow fibers while a vacuum applied to the inside of the fibers. The hydrophobic membrane allows the dissolved gas to pass through the membrane while retaining the water. The vacuum creates the driving force for dissolved gas in the liquid to pass through the membrane pores and be swept away by the vacuum pump.
Aqua Clear integrates 3M™ Liqui-Cel™ membrane contactors into our high purity RO/EDI packaged systems when the conductivity of CO2 in the RO permeate exceeds the recommended limit for EDI. The presence of dissolved CO2 will interfere with the exchange capacity of the EDI to achieve ultrapure water. Similarly, membrane contactors can be used prior to mixed bed DI in order to reduce regeneration chemical usage.
Membrane contactors are modular much like RO vessels and EDI modules and therefore easily scalable to fit the desired flow rate. We at Aqua Clear Water Treatment Specialists, take pride in everything that we can do for our customers. From the initial phone call or in-person meeting discussing your water expectations and criteria, thru the custom design and tailored proposal, to the fabrication, installation and commissioning of your system.
