Aqua Clear Ceramic Membrane Filtration (CMF) systems have various applications in wastewater reuse particularly for high fouling or high temperature wastewater. Ceramic membranes range in pore sizes from microfiltration to ultrafiltration to nanofiltration and are a chemical-free method of separating oil, grease, BOD, COD and TSS.
CMF technology is used in treating the wastewater from food processing, meat processing/rendering, creamery/dairy, pharmaceuticals, textiles, industrial laundry, chemicals/petrochemicals, and metal finishing.
Aqua Clear CMF systems concentrate the oil and grease into a smaller waste stream; thereby, reducing the cost of oil/grease disposal while increasing the overall recovery of water within the plant.
When combined with downstream technologies such as reverse osmosis to remove dissolved solids (TSS) and UV disinfection to remove pathogens (bacteria), the treated wastewater can be reused for onsite utility applications including washdown, irrigation, boilers, chillers and cooling towers. The end result is both savings in sewer surcharges and a reduction in makeup water.
Ceramic membranes are manufactured using a porous support made of aluminum oxide with an inorganic membrane layer of either aluminum oxide, titanium oxide or zirconium oxide.
Compared with polymeric membranes, ceramic membranes have:
- higher mechanical strength
- greater chemical stability (resistance to acids, bases and organic solvents)
- higher temperature resistance (300oF)
- higher flux rates
- greater microbial resistance
- greater separation efficiency
These properties make CMF ideal for applications where conditions are not well suited for polymeric membranes.

The CMF system is operated in crossflow mode continuously producing a filtered permeate stream and a concentrated waste stream. CMF systems are custom designed for each application and modular for expansion.
When evaluating CMF for water reuse, Aqua Clear will assist in identifying and applying for the rebates, incentives and tax breaks appropriate to the project that are available from the local and regional water and energy utilities.
